Chairman
Dr. Alan Boyle started his career in 1954 by joining the Chemical Division of Unilever as an engineer and during this time gained his qualifications in Mechanical Engineering. Alan went on to gain a Post Graduate Diploma, a Masters Degree and a PhD Degree. Dr. Boyle has been a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Manufacturing Engineers, a registered Chartered Engineer, the Institution of Electrical Engineers and a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. Following a 10 year period in industry from 1954 to 1964 as a design engineer and project engineer, Alan changed direction when in 1964 he joined the academic staff as John Moore’s University. From 1964 Alan held a number of posts including Principle Lecturer and Director of School of Engineering.

Aerospace Representative
Alan Smith from Scotland is currently residing in Houston, Texas. Alan has been a prominent figure in ISO auditing in North America since 1998. He is an IRCA Registered Lead Auditor for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001 and AS 9100. Educated to Masters Degree level in Metallurgical Engineering, Alan has over 20 years experience in Quality Assurance Management. Alan has worked on five continents with extensive experience in the aerospace sector.

SME Representative
Wayne Thomas started his career at Thames Board Mills (Unilever) in 1961 where he progressed through a number of different roles, from machine operative, quality control, work study, sales & marketing and into the management team. He stayed with Unilever until 1980 when he joined Bowthorne Corrugated as Sales Manager. Wayne moved to Peter Marsh Group in 1982 as a Factory Manager and since 1990 has been a main board Director. Wayne has extensive knowledge of the paper and board industry and has written, applied, and taken to certified status the following systems. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and BRC/IoP Packaging for food and other packaging materials.

Environmental Representative
Roger was formerly Chief Environment and Consumer Protection Officer with a large Metropolitan Borough were he was responsible for all aspects of Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Environmental Management and Emergency Planning. Roger currently undertakes consultancy, training and auditing in relation to ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO18001, BRC Food and Packaging, Asbestos Management and Removal.

SME Representative
Latterly CQI Fellow Inc Eng ASCBE registered executive assessor, Colin has 40 years experience as a BT Engineer in Chief Test and Inspection Branch covering major and minor suppliers. 25 years of quality assurance and environmental consultancy. 15 years as a Federation of Small Business Standards Spokesman and has served on the WCS ICB for 10 years.

Academic and Professional Institutions Representative
Professor David Shaw is currently the Head of the Department of Civic Design (74 Bedford Street South, University of Liverpool). He is interested in environmental planning and management and particularly the way the organisations, in the public, private and voluntary sectors engage with environmental agendas. As a spatial planning academic he has worked in Birmingham, Plymouth and Malawi before moving to Liverpool.

Consumer of Goods and Services Representative
George Brownie (J.P.) retired from British Telecom as Business Systems Quality Manager after 40 years with the company. During his career he had wide experience of many aspects of the telecommunications industry. He also served in the Magistracy as a Justice of the Peace for 18 years.

Professional Institutions Representative
George was apprentice trained and experiences include: Motor Industry, Ship Building, Machine Tool Industry and 34 years in the Nuclear Industry as a Planning Engineer, Project Engineer, Workshop Manager. Finally developing Quality Management systems and conducting 1st and 3rd party audits. As a freelance George carried out consultancy for several companies on the implementation of Management Systems. As a part-time tutor for Salford University he monitored and marked the Quality related project set for final year students within industry.

Academic and Environmental Institutions Representative
Dr. Calbert H Douglas is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Management (The Research Institute for the Built and Human Environment, School of Environment and Life Sciences, The University of Salford). His research covers environmental management systems, measuring returns from environmental investments, corporate social responsibility, sustainable built healthcare designs and health impact assessment of capital development programmes.
