What is OHSAS 18001?
The health and safety of people,
the need to meet legislation and maintain the good reputation
of your business are three very good reasons why organisations
are taking health and safety management seriously.
OHSAS 18001
is a British Standard / Assessment Specification for
Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It
was developed in response to the need for companies
to meet their health and safety obligations in an efficient
manner. A new edition of OHSAS 18001 was recently published.
It is now referred to as BS OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational
health and safety management systems - Requirements.
The OHSAS specification is applicable
to any organisation that wishes to:
• Establish an OH&S management system to eliminate
or minimise risk to employees and other interested parties
• Implement, maintain and continually improve an
OH&S management system
• Assure itself of its conformance with its stated
OH&S policy
• Demonstrate such conformance to others
• Seek certification/registration of its OH&S
management system by an external organisation
• Make a self-determination and declaration of
conformance with this OHSAS specification.
