ISO22000:2005 Food Safety Management System Certification

There are a number of standards which organizations in the food chain may have to meet in order to provide assurance on food safety matters. In addition, due to the increased world demand for safer food, there continues to be a range of other initiatives which can result in a significant duplication of effort for organizations, and also in associated increased costs. It obviously makes sense to have just one standard which is internationally recognized.

As a result, the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) has developed the ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management Systems Standard. Officially called ISO 22000:2005, Food safety management systems - Requirements for any organization in the food chain, it is an international standard which defines the requirements of a food safety management system covering all organisations in the food chain, including catering and packaging companies. clean hands image
Development of the standard was undertaken by ISO, by experts from the food industry, by representatives from other specialized international organizations, and in close cooperation with the Codex Alimentarius Commission (the body established by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) to develop food standards.

ISO 22000 can be implemented on its own, but is designed to be fully compatible with ISO 9001:2000. Organizations already certificated to ISO 9001 should therefore find it relatively easy to extend their certification to include ISO 22000. To assist in the task of integrating the management systems ISO 22000 includes a table identifying the links between the two standards.

ISO 22000:2005 is the first in a family of standards that includes the following documents :

ISO/TS 22004 - Food safety management systems – Guidance on the application of ISO 22000:2005

ISO/TS 22003 - Food safety management systems – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of food safety management systems

ISO 22005 - Traceability in the feed and food chain – General principles and guidance for system design and development
